Leaders Scenario-Based
e-learning Experience

Overview

This scenario follows the GROW Model, a coaching framework, where the participant guides a team member through setting and achieving a specific goal. The scenario concludes with different endings based on the effectiveness of the conversation. This training scenario aims to simulate real-world leadership challenges and provide participants with an opportunity to practice coaching skills and decision-making in a safe environment. By engaging with the scenario, participants can enhance their understanding of the GROW Model and develop strategies for effective leadership and team support.

Problem

The organization I worked with was grappling with high employee turnover rates and was seeking solutions to address underlying issues contributing to this challenge. Through communication with both current leaders and employees, we discovered a common theme: leaders felt unequipped to effectively engage in discussions regarding employee growth and goals, while employees expressed feelings of stress, overwhelm, and a lack of support. This feedback confirmed the urgent need for tailored training and support in equipping leaders with the necessary skills to foster productive conversations and provide meaningful support to their teams.

Solution

I proposed a solution that builds upon the organization's existing familiarity with the GROW Model. This solution involves a two-pronged approach: first, a revision of their in-person training sessions to provide a thorough review of the GROW Model, ensuring leaders have a solid understanding of its principles and application. Secondly, I recommended the development of an interactive scenario-based e-learning module, offering leaders the opportunity to practice their coaching skills in a safe environment with realistic consequences, as shown in this project. Additionally, to support ongoing implementation beyond the training sessions, I suggested the creation of a job aid and template for using the GROW Model, providing leaders with quick reference materials to reinforce their learning and guide their conversations with employees. This integrated approach aims to empower leaders with the necessary tools and resources to effectively support their teams and foster a culture of growth and development within the organization.

Process

I utilized Articulate Storyline to design an engaging Scenario-Based eLearning experience. This interactive platform allows leaders to navigate practical situations, promoting active learning and knowledge retention. Additionally, I created a job aid and template that can be downloaded through eLearning to complement the experience.

Action Map

In collaboration with leaders and employees, I crafted an action map that outlined the key steps toward achieving the project's overall goal. Together we identified critical actions that leaders should take to provide productive support to employees. The action map centers around the ultimate goal, branching out to depict the decisions and actions users encounter in real-life scenarios. This approach ensures the creation of a cohesive and purposeful learning experience for leaders.

Text-Based Storyboard

After finalizing the action map with specific actions, I collaborated closely with the SMEs to develop a text-based storyboard. This storyboard included various choices and consequences, with each option featuring a correct choice and distractors. Learners progress through the scenario based on their selections, experiencing positive outcomes for correct actions and real-life consequences for wrong choices. To create an authentic and immersive experience, I incorporated realistic employee replies triggered by each response option.

Visual Mock Up

For the visual design of the e-learning module, I followed direction to keep the coloring neutral toned, ensuring a versatile and inclusive aesthetic suitable for all leaders across the organization. Using a mood board as inspiration, I crafted a color palette that evokes a sense of professionalism and approachability. Additionally, I created a style guide to maintain consistency throughout the module, incorporating elements such as typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy. The layout was designed to be intuitive and adaptable, allowing for seamless use on various devices and screen sizes. This thoughtful approach to visual design ensures that the e-learning module not only looks visually appealing but also enhances the learning experience for all users.
